Safety at UKIRT
Safety procedures for visiting astronomers at UKIRT
It might be useful to refer to the Mauna Kea Safety Policies and the UKIRT specific policies.
- 2 people rule: There must always be at least 2 people at the
telescope. Observers are not allowed to enter the building without a TSS
present.
They are expected
to coordinate going up with the TSS. This normally is automatic since
the TSS does the driving, but needs coordinating when doing split
shifts.
- 14 hours rule: As mentioned in the High Altitude section, the maximum stay above HP is 14 hours.
- Sign in in the book and sign out on leaving.
- If you hear the fire alarm, leave the bulding immediately via a safe route. The meeting place is the UH 88" vestibule area.
- Telephones - get outside line by hitting a button on the bottom row. Similar procedure to pick up.
- Telephones - emergency number is 911. Other numbers are given in the safety manual. To page the building, */ITCM/7. Note:
in case of an emergency involving the TSS, call JCMT immediately
(button on the bottom row to get an outside line, then 935 0852)
- Dome: off limits areas are marked. Observers shouldn't go into these areas (this includes on the telescope yoke).
- Emergency exits - dome extension (2), main entrance, downstairs
back door (at end of corridor). Will be shown to you as soon as you
arrive at UKIRT. Here is a link to the evacuation map.
- Fire alarm pull-stations - will be shown to you as soon as you arrive at UKIRT.
- Assembly area: the UH 88 vestibule.
FIRE:
If you hear the fire alarm, evacuate the building and convene
outside.
Follow JAC staff to the emergency assembly area. If you find a fire:
- Raise the alarm and start evacuation
- Contact 911 (at the summit this can be left
until later)
- Do not fight the fire
- Do not re-enter the building unless the okay is
given by a JAC
staff
member.
General procedures for visiting astronomers at UKIRT
- Wireless: The summit is a wireless-free area. Please turn off the wireless adapter on your laptop.
- Bathroom doors downstairs are to be left shut.
- Beware of cisterns leaking and taps / faucets left on.
The TSS is the
work leader and safety officer during the night shift. He/She has the
authority to take any action deemed necessary for the safety of the
observer and of the telescope.
